Modern media brought them back with claims the sources never made. Genesis 6:1-4 is short, strange, and deliberately unexplained. Read the passage before the theories: the whole quest hangs on what four sentences do and do not say.

Four verses describe sons of God taking daughters of men, a shortened lifespan verdict, and Nephilim on the earth — then move straight into the Flood narrative.

Jewish and Christian interpreters have never agreed. Three readings dominate, and each solves one problem while creating another.

Only two passages use the word nephilim. Everything else in this folder is a related giant tradition — Anakim, Rephaim, Emim, Zamzummim, Goliath — which may or may not be the same subject. The distinction is kept visible on every card.

The second and only other direct use of 'Nephilim' — spoken by frightened scouts in what the text itself calls a bad report.

A named, measured champion — and the clearest case where the manuscripts themselves disagree about size.
'Sons of God' in Job
Job 1:6; 2:1; 38:7
The phrase used in Genesis 6 appears three times in Job, and in Job it plainly means heavenly beings.
The Watchers / 1 Enoch
An ancient Jewish expansion of one reading of Genesis 6.
1 Enoch tells the story at length: heavenly Watchers descend, take wives, father giants, teach forbidden knowledge, and are judged. It is ancient and influential — and it is not Genesis.

Ancient World Connections
Comparative mythology — parallels, not proof.
Mesopotamia, Canaan, Greece and beyond all tell stories of divine-human offspring and pre-flood sages. Similar shapes in different cultures are worth noticing. They are not evidence that every tradition describes the same beings.

That a Nephilim-descended lineage continued after the Flood and persists, unrecognised, in ordinary human populations today.
The Second Incursion Theory
That a second, post-Flood descent of heavenly beings produced the Anakim and Rephaim independently of the pre-Flood event.
Spiritual-Being Interpretation
That the giants' physical line ended, but their disembodied spirits continued — the Enochic explanation for unclean spirits.
'Walking Among Us' — Hidden Identity Claims
Modern claims that Nephilim or related beings live concealed within human society, recognisable only by hidden markers.
Elite Bloodline Versions
The claim that ruling families or institutions preserve a Nephilim or fallen-angel lineage deliberately.
Genetic and DNA Speculation
That a Nephilim inheritance would be detectable in the genome — or that modern genetic engineering could reproduce it.
Unusually Tall Humans
Documented very tall people are frequently pulled into Nephilim arguments. The documentation is real; the connection is not.
The Post-Flood Question
If the Flood ended that world, why does Numbers 13 mention Nephilim?
The single sharpest textual problem in the whole quest. Five main explanations exist; some are readings of the text, some are later speculation, and the board marks which is which.

Josephus records the angelic reading as common understanding; Philo reads philosophically. Jude quotes Enoch; Jude 6 and 2 Peter 2:4 use imprisonment language for sinning angels.

Justin Martyr, Athenagoras, Irenaeus and Tertullian discuss the angelic reading; Tertullian defends Enoch. Julius Africanus is an early advocate of the Sethite alternative.
4th–5th c.
INTERPRETATIONThe Sethite turn
Augustine's City of God XV argues the Sethite reading, and Western Christianity follows. The angelic view becomes marginal in Latin Christendom while persisting in Ethiopian tradition, where 1 Enoch remains canonical.
Medieval – 18th c.
INTERPRETATIONSethite dominance
The Sethite reading is standard in commentary and preaching. 1 Enoch is effectively lost to Europe until James Bruce brings Ge'ez manuscripts from Ethiopia in the 1770s and Richard Laurence publishes an English translation in 1821.
19th c.

Mound excavations, sensational press reports and outright hoaxes such as the 1869 Cardiff Giant seed the modern giant-skeleton corpus.

The Dead Sea Scrolls place Enochic and Giants literature firmly in the Second Temple period, giving the angelic reading a documented ancient pedigree rather than a merely legendary one.
