The Anakim in the Conquest Accounts

The Anakim are driven out of the hill country, with a specific note that some remained in Philistine cities.

Joshua 11:21-22 records the cutting off of the Anakim from Hebron, Debir, Anab and the hill country of Judah and Israel, adding that none were left in the land of the Israelites — 'only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod, there remained'. Caleb takes Hebron, formerly Kiriath-arba, named for 'a great man among the Anakim'.
Documented detail
The Anakim are treated as a real, locatable population with cities, a founder-name and a military history — not as spirits or monsters.
Why the Gath note matters
Gath is Goliath's city. The surviving-remnant line is the textual bridge readers use to connect the Anakim to the later Philistine champions.
