Traceable origin
The best-known images derive from a 2002 digital-art contest in which entrants composited archaeological photographs. Several award-winning entries entered circulation as 'discovery photographs' and have been re-shared ever since, often relabelled with new locations.
How to test an image yourself
Reverse image search for the earliest appearance; check whether the excavation is named; check whether any institution, report or measurement is attached. Genuine finds arrive with paperwork.
Status
Traced to digital art. Not evidence.
