Field Rules for This Quest

How to run the investigation without turning a good question into a bad conclusion.

INTERPRETATION

Rule 1 — the stamp tells you the weight

SCRIPTURE and ANCIENT TEXT mean a document exists. HISTORICAL SOURCE means a person recorded it. ARCHAEOLOGY means physical material. INTERPRETATION, MODERN CLAIM and SPECULATIVE mean somebody is reasoning, not reporting.

Rule 2 — a connection is not proof

Two things resembling each other is the beginning of an investigation, never the end of one. Resemblance is cheap; sequence, source and mechanism are expensive.

Rule 3 — dead ends stay on file

A theory that fails is a result. It stays in the folder, marked, so nobody has to chase it twice.
