Source Card — Nicaea 325 and Eusebius

First Ecumenical Council (325); Eusebius, Life of Constantine III.18-19

Primary material for what Nicaea actually settled about Pascha, as distinct from the formula later attributed to it.

DOCUMENTED HISTORYCHURCH ACT

Publisher and date

Conciliar canons and documents in the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, Series II, Volume XIV (The Seven Ecumenical Councils). Eusebius' Life of Constantine, Book III, preserves the imperial letter urging a common observance.

What to read it for

Read for the emphasis on unity of observance and independence from the contemporary Jewish reckoning. Note what is absent: a published algorithm. The Alexandrian computus is a subsequent development received by the churches.
